APE CAMP 2026 – Art, Technology and International Collaboration in Korea

I joined APE CAMP 2026 in South Korea, an international programme by Arts Council Korea bringing together artists, producers and engineers working across art, technology and interdisciplinary practice. The programme created a space to exchange approaches to emerging technologies, creative experimentation and international collaboration with participants from different disciplines and cultural contexts.

APE CAMP 2026 – Art, Technology and International Collaboration in Korea

I joined APE CAMP 2026 in South Korea, an international programme by Arts Council Korea bringing together artists, producers and engineers working across art, technology and interdisciplinary practice. The programme created a space to exchange approaches to emerging technologies, creative experimentation and international collaboration with participants from different disciplines and cultural contexts.

APE CAMP brings together people who work between established disciplines rather than within a single field. For me, this made the programme particularly relevant to a practice that moves between design, artificial intelligence, research and technical prototyping.

Art and technology across disciplines

APE CAMP was created to strengthen international networks around art and technology and to support collaborative practices between artists, producers, researchers, engineers and other technology specialists.

Rather than approaching technology only as a production tool, the programme created room to examine how technical systems shape creative processes, social interaction and new forms of cultural experience.

This interdisciplinary perspective closely connects to my own work with AI systems, digital avatars, interactive environments and emerging interfaces.

International collaboration

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was the opportunity to work and exchange with participants coming from different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Interdisciplinary collaboration often requires more than combining different skills. Each field brings its own assumptions, terminology and way of understanding a problem.

For me, these situations are particularly useful because they reveal where design can act as a bridge between technical systems, research questions and the people who eventually encounter a technology.

Emerging technology as creative material

Artificial intelligence, real-time systems and other emerging technologies increasingly influence not only what can be built, but how creative work itself is developed.

My own practice often begins by exploring a technical capability through a prototype, then using the resulting interaction to understand its wider implications.

APE CAMP provided a useful environment for sharing this way of working and encountering other approaches to technology-led experimentation.

Building beyond individual disciplines

The programme reinforced an idea that is central to my work: many of the most interesting technological questions cannot be addressed from design, engineering or research alone.

AI systems in particular require decisions about behaviour, interaction, technical architecture and social impact to evolve together.

Working across these perspectives makes it possible to move beyond technology demonstrations and toward experiences and systems that can be meaningfully tested with people.

A global network for art and technology

APE CAMP 2026 brought together around 120 participants, including approximately 40 international participants, as part of a wider effort by Arts Council Korea to build sustainable networks for art-technology convergence.

For me, participating in the programme expanded that network beyond Europe and created new connections with practitioners working across art, technology and research in South Korea and internationally.
