HIIG Panel – Generative AI and Creative Work

I joined a panel at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) to discuss how generative AI is changing creative work, design processes, and the development of new tools and interactive systems.

The discussion focused on how AI is moving from experimental tooling into real creative and technical workflows – affecting how ideas are developed, systems are prototyped, and decisions around authorship, responsibility, and human judgement are made.

Design engineering with generative AI
Generative AI is increasingly becoming part of the design and development process – from early concept exploration and rapid prototyping to interactive systems and production workflows. The discussion examined where these tools genuinely improve iteration and where human judgement remains essential.

From tools to working systems
Beyond isolated AI demos, the more relevant question is how generative models can be integrated into reliable workflows and products. This includes evaluating model behaviour, designing interaction patterns, and understanding the limitations of AI-generated outputs.

Authorship, attribution, and human judgement
As AI becomes embedded in creative and technical processes, conventional ideas of authorship and ownership become less clear. The panel explored how attribution, creative control, and human decision-making may need to evolve alongside these technologies.

Responsible AI in public-facing applications
When AI systems become part of products, interfaces, and cultural experiences, transparency and safeguards become design requirements rather than abstract principles. Responsible implementation means considering context, user control, failure cases, and the consequences of generated outputs.
